Ticket Options

Choose Your Prague Castle Ticket

Three main options cover 99% of visitors. Unsure if the skip-the-line ticket is worth it, or whether a guided tour beats going solo? Both answered below.

  • Old Royal Palace & Vladislav Hall
  • St. George's Basilica
  • Golden Lane & Daliborka Tower
  • Valid for 2 consecutive days

Insider tip

The skip-the-line ticket doesn't let you skip the security check — everyone goes through the metal detectors at the same gate. What you're skipping is the ticket office queue, which during summer can run 30–45 minutes on its own.

What Is Free at Prague Castle?

You can spend a genuinely good hour inside the complex without spending a crown.

All Four Courtyards

Walk freely through the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Courtyards. The changing of the guard happens in the First Courtyard at noon — no ticket required.

St. Vitus Cathedral Vestibule

The front section of the cathedral is accessible without a ticket. You'll see the main nave — but to reach the tombs, Mucha window, and crown jewels chapel, you need a paid entry.

Royal Garden (April – October)

The northern gardens are free and beautifully maintained. Great views across the city from the terrace. The Ball Game Hall and Summer Palace are visible from the garden paths.

Golden Lane After Hours

Golden Lane (the 16th-century artisan street where Kafka once lived) is free to walk through after the buildings close in the evening. You can't enter the houses, but the atmosphere after the crowds leave is special.

Verdict

If you're on a tight budget or doing a quick stopover, the free areas are genuinely worthwhile. But if you're flying from the US specifically to see Prague Castle, spend the €30. The Vladislav Hall, Mucha's stained glass, and the Golden Lane houses are the reason people come back.

Practical Advice

4 Things to Know Before You Buy

Turn Your Brightness Up

The ticket scanners at Prague Castle struggle with dim phone screens. Before you reach the gate, crank your brightness to maximum. Saves 3 minutes of embarrassed fumbling in front of a queue.

Book 2–3 Days Ahead in Summer

April through October the ticket office queues hit 45 minutes by 10am on busy days. Online tickets sell out too during peak weekends. Book a few days ahead — or at minimum the morning of your visit. Check current opening hours before you go.

Your Ticket Is Valid 2 Days

The Main Circuit ticket can be used over 2 consecutive days — each building is scan-once only. This is genuinely useful. Split St. Vitus and Golden Lane across two mornings if you want to avoid crowds and go at your own pace. See our month-by-month crowd guide to plan your timing.

No Student or Senior Discount Online

Discounts for EU students and seniors are available at the physical ticket office only — not through Tiqets. If you have an ISIC card or are an EU senior, buying at the gate may actually be cheaper. Be prepared for the queue though.

On the ground

What nobody tells you before you buy

The ticket is the easy part. Here's what actually determines whether you have a good day or a terrible one.

Most tourists do this

Walk up to the main entrance at Hradčanské Square — the Giants Gate with the big statues and the stoic guards. It looks like the entrance. It is a bottleneck. The courtyard before the ticket scanners turns into a wall of people by 10 AM, even if you have an online ticket and just need to get your barcode scanned.

Do this instead

Take Tram 22 or 23 to the Pražský hrad stop. It's a flat 5-minute walk to the second courtyard entrance. No steep climb. No giants. The queue is almost never more than a few minutes deep, even in July. Same castle, same ticket, none of the chaos. (Note: in spring 2026 this stop is closed for track repairs until mid-July — ride one stop further to Pohořelec instead.)

Timing

Arrive at 8:30 AM. Leave by noon.

The castle opens at 9 AM. The ticket office queue hits 45 minutes by 10 AM on peak days, even for people with online tickets waiting at the scanners. Get there early and you'll have St. Vitus Cathedral nearly to yourself for the first half hour. By 11:30 AM the tour groups arrive in waves. Leave before they do.

Don't walk past this room

The window that started a war.

In the Old Royal Palace — included in your Main Circuit ticket — there's a plain-looking room in the Louis Wing. On May 23, 1618, Protestant nobles cornered three Catholic officials here and threw them out the window. They fell 20 metres and survived, apparently landing in a manure pile. That single act triggered the Thirty Years' War and killed an estimated 8 million people. Most visitors walk straight through.

When the crowds get too much

Nový Svět: 10 minutes from the gate.

When the tour groups get thick, walk 10 minutes northwest to Nový Svět (New World). It's a winding cobblestone lane of coloured houses where the castle's goldsmiths and servants lived. No souvenir shops. Look closely at the walls — you can spot iron cannonballs still lodged in the masonry from the 18th-century Prussian occupation. Almost nobody goes here.

The fine that ruins mornings

Validate your tram ticket. Every time. Without exception.

Prague public transport is cheap and excellent — Tram 22 to the castle costs around 40 CZK. But buying a paper ticket is not enough. You must physically stamp it in the yellow validation box mounted to the pole inside the tram, before you sit down.

Undercover inspectors work the tourist lines. An unstamped ticket in your pocket is the same as no ticket. The fine is 1,500 CZK on the spot — it drops to 1,000–1,200 CZK if you pay immediately by card. "I didn't know" doesn't work. They've heard it ten thousand times.

If you use the PID Lítačka app, activate your ticket before boarding — the app has a built-in 1–2 minute delay specifically to catch people who buy only after spotting an inspector.

🍽️
Where to eat without getting ripped off

Most restaurants near the main gate are tourist traps — frozen goulash, menus in six languages, automatic 15% service charges buried in the bill. One exception: Kuchyň, right outside the castle by the Salm Palace. It has outdoor seating with a direct view over the city, serves properly cooked Czech food, and doesn't feel like a performance. Worth knowing if you want to eat near the castle without regret.

Common Questions

Prague Castle Tickets — FAQ

The entry ticket with introduction costs €30 per adult when bought online. The fast-track guided option starts at €40. If you want a full guided tour with entry included, that runs from €49 to €52 depending on the tour. The Castle + Lobkowicz Palace combo is €35.

Prices above are for adults via Tiqets. The official castle website (hrad.cz) sells a bare entry ticket (no introduction or guide included) for around 450 CZK for the Main Circuit.

During peak season (April through October), yes — strongly recommended. The ticket office queues can run 30–45 minutes by mid-morning on busy days, and popular online slots do sell out during summer weekends.

In the off-season (November through March) queues are minimal and walk-up buying at the gate is usually fine.

The Main Circuit ticket (€30 online) covers four buildings: St. Vitus Cathedral (full interior including the Mucha window and royal crypt), the Old Royal Palace (Vladislav Hall and the Rider's Staircase), St. George's Basilica, and Golden Lane with the Daliborka Tower.

The ticket is valid for 2 consecutive days. You can enter each building only once, but there's no requirement to do everything in one visit.

Yes — ticket offices are located inside the castle complex (near the Second Courtyard). They accept cash (CZK and EUR) and card. However during summer the windows can sell out before noon and queues are long.

Buying online costs the same price and lets you walk directly to the entrance gate rather than the ticket office.

The outer castle grounds are free — all four courtyards, the front vestibule of St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Royal Garden (April–October). Walking the grounds, watching the guard change at noon, and taking in the views over Prague costs nothing.

To enter the cathedral interior, Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane houses, and St. George's Basilica you need a paid ticket. See our full free areas guide →
